چکیده

As part of the NASA International Polar Year activities, a Ka-band cross-track interferometric synthetic aperture radar recently demonstrated high precision elevation swath mapping capability. This proof-ofconcept instrument was achieved by interfacing antennae and Ka-band electronics with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s L-band UAVSAR. Deployed on the NASA Gulfstream III, initial successful engineering flights in March and April 2009 marked the first airborne demonstration of single-pass cross-track interferometry at Ka-band.

Global Ice Sheet Mapping Orbiter Concept: Airborne Experi- ments

We describe tests of a spaceborne, radar-system concept envisioned to measure the spatial reflectivity and the 3dimensional surface and basal topography of terrestrial ice sheets and to determine the physical properties of the glacier bed. We conducted experiments during May 2006 over northwestern Greenland using a 150 MHz radar operated from a Twin Otter aircraft. We conducted more extensive e...

Penetration depth of interferometric syntheticsaperture radar signals in snow and ice

Digital elevation models of glaciated terrain produced by the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) airborne interferometric synthetic-aperture radar (InSAR) instrument in Greenland and Alaska at the C(5.6 cm wavelength) and L-band (24-cm) frequencies were compared with surface elevation measured from airborne laser altimetry to estimate the phase center of the interferometric depth, or penetrat...

Bed topography of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, and Byrd Glacier, Antarctica

This paper presents the bed topography of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, and Byrd Glacier, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with high-sensitivity radars. To understand the processes causing the speed-up and retreat of outlet glaciers, and to enable the development of nextgeneration ice-sheet models, we need information on bed topography and basal conditions. To this end, we perfor...

A physically based calving model applied to marine outlet glaciers and implications for the glacier dynamics

We present results from numerical ice-flow models that include calving criteria based on penetration of surface and basal crevasses, which in turn is a function of longitudinal strain rates near the glacier front. The position of the calving front is defined as the point where either (1) surface crevasses reach the waterline (model CDw), or (2) surface and basal crevasses penetrate the full thi...

Tidally driven ice speed variation at Helheim Glacier, Greenland, observed with terrestrial radar interferometry

We used a terrestrial radar interferometer (TRI) at Helheim Glacier, Greenland, in August 2013, to study the effects of tidal forcing on the terminal zone of this tidewater glacier. During our study period, the glacier velocity was up to 25md. Our measurements show that the glacier moves out of phase with the semi-diurnal tides and the densely packed melange in the fjord. Here detrended glacier...
